Summer Camp or Coaching for a Teen

Hi! We are new to ADHD.... my daughter is almost 17 and definately beind the curve on dealing with it. I thought that a summer camp or perhaps someplace that had adventure/fun mixed with coaching on organizational skills and coping would be perfect....but do they exist? for a 17-year-old? Any constructive response would be appreciated!

Summer Camp or Coaching for a Teen

Hi. I've been researching summer camps a lot this week. My son is only 9, so I don't know if some of the ones I found would work. I think we're sending him to Camp Firefly in Wisconsin, but they only take up to 13 year olds. Some of the other camps that look good are Camp Nuhop in Ohio and Camp Kirk in Canada--both focus on social skills. Another fantastic program that might be great for your daughter are the SOAR camps (you should be able to find them through google). They're adventure camps for kids like ours. They work a lot with team building and the kids are responsible for organizing all their meals and the other details of the trip. It's pretty expensive (really, they all are), but I have a friend who's sending her son to Wyoming for the second year in a row and they think it's fantastic. You should be able to google "summer camp ADHD" and find out what's in your area. Good luck.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I did see the SOAR info. It is reassuring to know that your friend thinks highly of them and will be sending her child again. I appreciate the input!

Just heard about Super Camp

I have a 16 year old and was looking for something similar. Have not sent her there yet but you might want to explore it. It sounded great and was listed as a resource on one of the ADD resource links. http://supercamp.com

Super Camp

Hi there,

I sent my daughter, who has ADD, to Super Camp last summer at the Standford location. She was a junior in high school, so we sent her to the senior edition (there is a 7-day for the younger kids). She was pretty good at school, but really had a hard time concentrating on studying, and had major test anxiety. She went to the camp (it was 10 days for the older kids), and not only did she come back with fun study skills, but she sincerely got less frustrated when trying to study. I was nervous about her not wanting to go, so I called the headquarters and they let her talk to another kid who had gone the summer before and ask tons of questions. The other student also told us that they do an "Adventure Day" where they go on a ropes course and do team building. I was so happy for my daughter to have more self confidence, not just with school, but also with making friends :)

Yes it is possible!

Yes it is possible. The events that occur at a ]teen wilderness program are going to help the youth overcome a variety or problems. Being able to set goals and to meet those challenges gives them confidence. They will feel inspired and feel that they have the ability to do anything with their life that they would like to. Such a transformation of their mindset makes an unbelievable difference in terms of who they are and what they want to do after they are done at the wilderness program. You can find more information here: http://www.teenwildernessprograms.org/

See the site

You need to see this site http://www.teenwildernessprograms.org/ in order to know what you are looking for. There are some important factors to consider such as have you give your daughter a help in the past? And if yes has it worked? Other things are you prepared to have her attend such a wilderness camp? How is your ability to meet the cost of it? And also your willingness to work with theraphists at the camp after your daughter returns? If you live in the USA you can click get help now section to make a request.
