How to deal with the new diagnosis?

I'm a mother of 2 boys..oldest is 9 and youngest is 6. My oldest son was just diagnosed with ADHD. He has been having problems in school with his work, it has also been a struggle with homework. He recently changed classrooms and his new teacher brought it to my attention. We had already been seeing a psychotherapist for some other concerns so I asked him to test him. He did a computer test for him and it came back positive. He told us he is in a mild to moderate stage. Since the diagnosis I have been researching ADHD. I see many symptoms in my child. I'm just really scared about meds. Can anyone tell me if they have had a highly intelligent child that scored in the mild to moderate stage/level? and did it get worse as time went on? He is in 3rd grade now and I have heard that once he goes to 4th it will get harder if we don't start meds now.

My youngest is going to be tested soon too but he has learning disabilities that they are working with first. It just so hard to deal with on spectrum to another and I'm try to soak it all in. Thanks for any advice. A

welcome

hello, welcome to the site :)

i can tell you my experience, because my son got diagnosed last june, at nearly 15. in answer to your question, if it gets harder as they go up grades in school, it does. because every year they are learning less and less things. with meds, they can know more what's going on in class, so i do think that it helps. mine was on meds the last year of his school (he fisnished this month). we did notice some of his grades went up, with a few marks, but it's always good. he was started on ritalin in october and had his exams in february. so i think that if you start at an early age, it'll help them much more. i know, it's terrifying that you have to give meds to your son, but if it helps, i think it's worh a try. good luck. hope you have more experienced parents answering you on this.

How to deal...

Hi... I am fairly new to ADD also (we were diagnosed in Nov last year). My son is 9YO - I feel like I have just done a thesis in reading and trying to make sense of all the information out there.

My boy has ADD inattentive - he was a B' student - now he is getting A's. I know there is a lot of concern about meds, at first I was apprehensive but now I recommend them. My son said it best 'it was like I had a hurricane in his head now it is windy instead'.

I am not saying that it solved all his problems and we have had all sorts of troubles balancing his dosage and don't think we have got it right yet, we also suffered from lost appetite that you read about - he eats now at 10pm - but has maintained his weight. But it really did help him - and at the end of the day - it is about him.

You know you really have to read and research and don't think (as I first did) that medication will solve his problems, but it is a start....

Anyway that is our story... hope it helps... Samantha
