Strattera or Intuniv

My 8 yo son has ADHD and has tried several stimulant medications over the course of 2 1/2 years (Concerta, Focalin XR, Vyvanse, Daytrana, Ritalin). The worst was Vyvanse and the best was Daytrana, but he developed an allergic reaction on his skin after 2 months. We're using non-extended release Ritalin 20mg 2xday until the end of the school year. The child psychiatrist is suggesting either Strattera or Intinuv to try next as extended release options (indicating Intuniv as her first recommendation). Honestly both make me nervous - I fear the emotional side effects of Strattera - crying, aggression and the fact that it's not as effective for ADHD (I think 6 out of 10 kids experience improvements). Given our track record I think we'll fall into the group that sees no improvement and will be back to square one after a month or two. I'm concerned with Intuniv because the main side effecet appears to be drowsiness and I don't want to turn him into a zombie. I'm also concerned that it is so new long term studies haven't been done. At any rate I'm interested in hearing your experiences with either drug used as treatment for your child. Thanks

Good Experience with Intuniv

Our 9yo ADHD (hyper-impulsive subtype) daughter has been on 2mg Intuniv (with 5mg Focalin XR) for about a month now. We have been very pleased with the results. It's my understanding that Intuniv is especially helpful with the ODD type symptoms, which were definitely an issue at our house. It has really taken the edge off her temper and helped to bring out the more reasonable child I knew was in there. It's difficult to say if it's also helping with inattention issues at school because I believe it's the Focalin that has successfully addressed that. This summer we may try just the Intuniv to see. She is definitely not a zombie - still athletic and energetic. Just seems to have things in better perspective. NOTE - she was very drowsy the first few evenings on 1mg and then a week later the first few evenings on 2 mg. We have not felt the need to go to 3mg at this point. But the drowsy evening went away quickly - no more than 2-3 days. And no falling asleep in school. She seems a little more prone to tears, but not much. And it seems an improvement on all the anger! I sure hope you find a successful plan that works for your little ADHD sweetheart. They're so worth it, aren't they?!
