Managing money?

Managing money....hmmm... We are supposed to manage our money? That explains a lot. Like why I don't have any.. 8)

Trust me...you are not alone. The recent economic downturn has brought to light just how skilled I am at MISmanaging my money.

Managing Money

It really devastated me to find out how clueless I am in this arena. Fortunately, I have a sister who is good at untangling messes like this who is willing to help me. I need to figure out how to get a handle on this. If she dies, I will never be able to deal with this on my own right now. I am putting this question to my therapist tomorrow. Medication is not going to be a cure-all, but I am wondering if there is anything out there for this specific problem. If I have to get creative (one of the PLUSES of being ADHD!) I am determined to figure this out. I am wondering how other people deal with this.

I hear you...

Money management is one of biggest challenges with respect to Adult ADD/ADHD. Is there someone you trust who can act as a coach/advocate to help you monitor/oversee your finances? Sometimes creating some type of reminder system helps such as post-it notes, etc. There are always professional money managers/organizers if you want to go down that road...

Thank you for your response. One of my sisters volunteered to help me out here. We are wading through the muck and yuck. I expect it to get worse before it gets better, but at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel. As for post-it notes, I should own stock in the company!

Managing Money

Hello, I have just become a member of this fabulous website, having been diagnosed a few weeks ago with ADHD. It has been such a huge discovery for me, that I am still overwhelmed, but finding the books I've bought very helpful and feeling some hope that there is a way forward from the caos I usually live in! I am terrible with money and have spent my life (am 42 now) leaping from financial crisis to financial crisis. I felt so ashamed and did not understand why but it is such a relief to be able to talk about and admit it. I have recently asked a member of my family to 'look after' the small amount of money I have (have been off work for the past year having had a breakdown) and admitting that I could not trust myself with it just now was very liberating as it is actually taking control of the situation. I was so busy trying to fix other people that I didn't know i needed to fix myself! ! I am so grateful for websites like this, and for other ADDers. Anyway this is a ramble so will stop now, but I am very interested in this topic and will read and learn from what others say. Thank you.

Seriously I can't go on e-bay because I love the autions, I have gone to and left in middle of contracts work so I now owe over 8,000 dollars paying things have become easier with on-line payments and finally knowing my husband is so much better at than I am. I have a check book and have for over year keeping it balanced. For me its a big accomplishment Money I just hope to have enough to eat., home with a roof, clothes on my back and some good old fashion fun. let my husband do the saving it works for me

Hi: I understand your struggles with money. I have them as well. Perhaps this story will help in some small way. http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/7304.html

I am so glad others have responded to this. I have never seen it addressed in print. I am also changing some of my meds, which my doctor says will hopefully improve this. I just spent, and spent, and spent without any conception as to where the money is coming from. I thank God I caught it while I can still turn it around! It is going to take TIME!

Money? What Money??

Money is a total nightmare for me. Or rather bills and lack of money are a nightmare for me. The only reason my house payment gets made on time is because it is a set amount that comes out of the bank as soon as our paychecks hit through direct deposit so I don't have to think about it. I really wish I could do that will the utility bill, and in fact I did try it, but because of the way they take the money the utility companies actually tried to withdraw the funds before our funds hit so it bounced. When I moved the withdrawal to the day after we got paid it put it in limbo for several days making the payments late, and after 3 late payments the utility company would no longer allow me to do auto pay. Now I'm back to having to remember, and having to pull the money before my equally ADD hubby "forgets" that bills have to be paid and pulls from an ATM for something he just "has to have". BOTH of us struggle with impulse spending, and at this point we are barely squeaking by once bills and meds are paid. Then last week I get a call that my student loans that were in deferment are now in default (gee thanks for letting me know my deferment time was up) and they way to garnish 60% of my monthly take home! All this for a degree I never even got to finish thanks to a nervous breakdown, being hospitilazied, and a year later when I was told I could return to classes, being told that my degree program was no longer being offered and in order to earn a degree I'd have to complete another 3 to 4 semesters for a totally different degree. I have no idea what I'm going to do at this point, and asking my husband for advise is useless ... I've tried talking to him about what options we might have and he totally shuts down while I am left in hysterical tears each time the collections agency for dept of ed calls with their pushing and threats.

Managing Money, Suzzy

I just got hit with an unexpected $600 plumbing bill this morning that kind of threw me for a loop! My finances are a nightmare, but through sheer determination and the help of medication, family, a good therapist and St. Joseph, I will get this under control. Just when I was about to have a pity party over this, I got a letter in the mail today from my health insurance telling me I have money coming to me. What they are sending me almost completely will cover the plumbers! Thank you St. Joseph! Hang in there, girl!
