So many people are judgemental of ADHD kids and parents

My two daughters, ages 6 1/2 and 4, have ADHD. I just get so tired of people who don't know much about it saying stupid things to me! Like, it's such a shame to have to medicate children... don't you think this is just the IN condition and overdiagnosed?....maybe if you just fed them healthier food they wouldn't have this problem...that's normal behavior, kids will be kids....or, my favorite, if you have so many problems with your kids, why are you having another one? This stuff just makes me so mad! The general public just seems to know so little about this and have so many misperceptions. We are NOT bad parents, this IS a real condition, and it is hard on the family so we need empathy, not judgement.

Judged!

Hi there!

I just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone in being judged. I have a 10 year old son who is very impulsive and often gets into trouble and it's my husband's family that are the most judgemental!!! You just have to stick to your guns and know that you are doing everything that you can and everything that is best for your children. Let these people walk a mile in your shoes before they judge. I can guarantee you if they did, they wouldn't be so vocal!

Hang in there!

Jugements from a Teens Perspective

Hi there, My name is Jessica and I'm 19 years old and was just diagnosed with ADHD only 8 months ago. It was a relief finding an answer but it didn't take me long to realize just how much judgement there is towards people with ADHD. I'm learning to explain myself by saying, "That's just how my brain works." instead of, "I have ADHD." One of the reasons why I love this website is not only am I learning more about myself, but I'm also learning how to handle situations with people who don't understand or have strong preconceived notions about the disorder that are incorrect. Sadly, it's a constant battle. But seeing this post really shows how much you care. Your support is doing so much good for not only your children but for me and everyone else who has ADD/ADHD. So, Thank You.

Sincerely, Jessica
