You and the therapist can agree on reasonable goals (meaning ones that you can accomplish in your current state). I meet with a therapist once a month to discuss goals (professional and personal) that I need to get done. I was heading down a very long hill in both my professional and personal lives, so I needed some help. We don't solve the "problems of my childhood." I tell her if I think the goals are overwhelming or "just right." I usually leave each month with a list of 6-8 items to cover; when I go the next month, I have at least addressed all of them even if only 4 of them are complete. I look at this as an essential part of my program, along with medication. My long term goal is to advance my professional life..........and I hadn't made any progress in that for over three years (when it was practically in ruin). It's baby steps, baby steps. The therapy is getting me there.....
