Learning to Control Thoughts/Daydreams

I am a teenager who was diagnosed with ADHD about a year ago, and I am struggling to find advice and resources on how to manage my ADHD (and associated anxiety) socially and emotionally. I find that I often get lost in "Daydreaming". I will dwell on ideas I have -be it positive or negative- for long periods of time and replay moments or circumstances (real ones or not) in my head to justify the existence of those ideas. An example would be I think of the possibility that a friend is mad at me (not based in any evidence more than they didn't say Hi to me one time at school), and my brain will shoot off playing through scenarios in which he can't stand me, a scenario in which I tell him he should get over being mad at me because he is just being a jerk, etc, etc. I find it very difficult at many times to come to conclusions based on real information; I always feel a pull to let my brain go off and continue down irrelevant and unjustified trains of thought, leaving me expecting or anticipating incorrect realities and skewing my ability to eventually behave relevantly and rationally around others. It should be noted that being irritable, tired, angry, or not confident magnifies these problems. I have resources for doing schoolwork that work great and I am on some ADHD medication, but I feel like I am a victim to my problems controlling my thoughts. Has anyone else experienced similar issues to me, and if so, how have you learned to work with these issues and the associated social and emotional struggles?

Some advice

It sounds like you have problems with either overfocusing or anxiety. You really need to bring this up with your doctor, and make sure he understands that it is interfering with your life. There are prescription meds and OTC supplements that can help. I take 5-htp for this very problem. Also, try exercising daily, even just a short walk. This increases bloodflow to the brain. Anxiety can sometimes be alleviated with a higher-carb diet, too.

Until you can get to your doctor, treat it like a bad habit. Each time you start to go down that road, as soon as you recognize it, start imagining a positive outcome instead.

Daydreams

You might really benefit from ADHD Coaching. You can Google several sites and read about how a coach can help you work through things like rumination (that's what you're doing when you keep thinking about something all the time) or perfectionism etc. A coach can help you set goals and work towards them, whether they are about school, social life, or career plans. Even though medication can help with symptoms of ADHD and anxiety, coaching can really help you discover some of the good things that come along with ADHD and allow you to take advantage of them.

Good luck!

i know what your going through

ive had the exact same problem with daydreaming and everything else you said for a long time now im (16 by the way) it really does start to drive you crazy. Especially when you know the senarios your going through in your head mean nothing at all and when you finally think you have gotten them out of your head they come back again and you keep on thinking of things to justify them like you said . for me it can just be something someone said that i disagreed with or just the way someone reacted. even if its not a big deal i keep thinking about it and try to think of things i could have said or what would happen if it ended differently, or if if someone used an annoyed tone at me ( even if it was most likely not my fault ) but i just go on thinking what i could have...... ect. this can go on for hours days or even longer if its really bad. sorry for any typos spelling or grammar mistakes im really tired from school and dont feel like correcting everything
