Newly Diagnosed 23 yr old Need Help Plz!!!

I am a 23 year old female from Barrie, Ontario, Canada. I was recently diagnosed with adhd. I have noticed over the years of being disorganized and my time managment sucks. lol! I was told by someone that a coach might to be able to help me to adapt to living with ADHD. I have yet to be able to find a coach in my area. This is affecting my job and would like to makes some changes. If anyone knows of a coach or any advice or words of encouragment they would be greatly appreciated!

ADD Coach Academy

I just ran across this website the other day; you should check it out: www.addca.com You can search their coach directory to find one near you or if there isn't one near you they say most of the coaching is done over the phone. Looks like there are several in Canada, not sure how close they are to you, but worth a try. Hope this helps. Good luck!

life is life

Hello,

Just read your message about ADHD. I'm 31yo from Montréal with ADHD. It's not a problem my friend, more like a new life. That's how I see it. I used to smoke cigarettes (pack) and also weed. I was so stressed out because of all this chaotic environment around me..ADHD people always look for something to depend on, coffee, drugs, cigarettes, food etc.. It has changed my life ! I'm now vegetarian and eat organic whenever i can... I don't smoke cigarettes anymore and joints only once in a while. I swim 2500m everyday (that's 80 laps)...can you believe it for an ex smoker..it almost cured me. All I wanna say is sport + good diet/nutrition is all you need. And also get all the useless stress out of your life, relationships and so on and even if you have to change career. I used to work in Europe as a programmer, came back to Montreal to study Engineering and now I know I can't stand office work even if I'm an Engineer..I need to move, to talk to people, to help... so I've applied to do a diploma in physiotherapy (it's five years ! and i'm 31) but I don't care !! Things are the way they are you can't change to be like everyone else you must seek peace in yourself and ease your life as much as possible. That's what ADHD is about. take care

Know what you are going through

I was diagnosed when I was 29 and it was devastating. At the same time it was the best thing that has happened to me. I went to a psychiatrist who specializes in ADHD and he has helped me understand who I am. I have also helped HIM understand who I am too.

There are many resources, (ADDITUDE magazine being the best) and also getting software that helps with organization. A program called Text-Aloud reads my emails to me and also my textbooks and online resources because I can't sit still long enough to read (could help you with work). And medication does help although I hate to admit that. It is a long hard journey but us ADHD'ers are made of tough stuff!

I guess the questions you need to ask yourself are...What are you going to do about it? Are you going to let it beat you or are you going to "flip it the bird" and make something of yourself?

I asked myself that same question and I decided to go back to school. I am going to graduate with honors in a year. A complete opposite to my failing grades in high school. I have had to LEARN HOW TO LEARN and how to ask for help (the latter means you have to swallow your pride). Whenever I feel down...it helps to jump on here. Or I like to look at the lists of famous people with ADHD as inspiration. Oh yeah...tell your boss. It is a legitimate disability and you have the same rights as other disabled people. Maybe s/he can help or give you accommodations. good luck

Hi Kadrury

Exercise and diet are definitely good for us (thanks Gigi). A coach can help you become more organized and learn how to achieve the goals you really want. Most coaching is done over the phone, so your coach doesn't have to be in your area. If you invest in coaching, make sure the coach has specific training in ADD/ADHD coaching. Regular coach training doesn't address the special needs of ADD clients. I went to ADD Coach Academy and I have ADHD myself. If you would like to talk further on this you can email me at ben@hyperfocuscoach.com and I would be happy to call you to discuss it.
