I think I am dyslexic too!

Short story, or as short as I can get it. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 29 year old. Since then I have worked my pa-too-tie off to understand my strengths and weakness and have actually made a success of myself. I went back to school, found a major I love (anthropology) and for the first time in my life my grades were good enough to get me into the honors program (now I feel guilty about making fun of the honors kids in High School). But...here's the problem...now that i am in upper division classes the reading material is getting more difficult. Very philosophical. I am having a very difficult time grasping what these old dead guys were writing about. I have been getting help from the disability center and they put the books into PDF format so I can have my computer read it to me, but that only helps so much. I still have multiple library books to read and theories to memorize. I started reading about dyslexia and I have found that I have some of the symptoms. It is too much money to be tested and the Disability Resource Center says that the learning strategies are exactly the same for ADHD. I am getting frustrated. Anyone out there have some good tips for reading comprehension?

Dyslexia

the advice I can give you is the same I got when I went back to school in my 30's: "Don't be so hard on yourself"

I was having difficulites also comprehending everything at once from the first time I was reading it. I asked my professor at the time for advice and he took me to see the Dean, who handed me a book and asked me to read any line outloud. I did so and after few sentences he interrupted me and asked me to explain what I just said. Then he said: with my many years of teaching, by listening to you reading and looking at your grades, there's no way in this world you have the slightless trace of dyslexia; you're being too hard on yourself. Not all writers are made equal, not all writings are easy to understand right away, it's ok to take some time in processing a new information: take it easy.

it helped me forever. hope this help you too.

There are some programs...

If you go to dyslexia.com you'll find some books and a counseling program that might help. I got the book The Gift of Dyslexia and it gives specific instructions on how to have someone counsel you through learning to master your Dyslexic symptoms. It totally made sense to me, I haven't tried the counseling yet but it's on my looooong ADHD "to do" list. :)

Supposedly it can help reading comprehension as well as speed and it made tons of sense to me. The author/developer of the book/system has dyselxia himself and was functionally iliterate until age 38. Now he reads books cover to cover in a couple of hours and has written 2 books himself.

Good luck!
