Newbie

Hi, I'm 35 and I was just diagnosed with ADD. I found that I was having trouble reading and comprehending conversations in meetings. I mentioned these to my doctor who suggested I might have ADD. So I did some research on my own. I couldn't believe how much ADD describes me. It took a few days to digest this and it explained a lot about my life. I am going to start medication tommorow. Of course I forgot the name of the medicine that I will be taking but it is a stimulant. I'm nurvous that it's going to make me jittery and a spazz. But from what I've been reading a lot of people say it's really helped them & has eased a lot of the symptoms of ADD. If anyone here has been diagnosed as an adult & wanted to share advice I would welcome it!!

Newbie too

Newbie you're not alone, I was diagnosed over a year ago, also in my 40's and I found some sense in my live's behaviours after learning about this condition. Also amuses me how many people are NOT like me (us) and they could have the same worries and struggles in life but go thru differently.

I personally am not too keen of finding help from a coach, since I have to work first on my attitude towards "receiving advice", which it's one of the issues ADDers have to deal with. I know that when I'm told what to do my insides turn upside down and backwards, however, if the same 'command' is presented like a challenge...it fuels me and inspires me like magic! ---Note to coach: would you consider this? I think most ADDers have an issue with taking suggestions (never the less orders)

Do not expect the medicine to help you remember where you put your car's keys while you were walking inside your house thinking what you would do first, having something to eat or taking a shower. Medicine will not tell you 'look! see? your car's keys ar in the fridge!' Medicine is a tool to wake you up and move you forward, the path you take have to be concious. I haven't found a medicine that makes me aware, this is a daily struggle, and I understand the benefit of a coach, because he/she could give you rules to follow and make your life easier. (I just have to overcome my own resistance to 'follow')

Good luck and post your progress and how you come out of pitfalls, please, that would help everybody here.

thanks

Elena

Another Newbie

I recently requested an assessed for adult ADHD after spending the last few years helping my 10 year old son succeed after being diagnosed with ADHD/Asperger's Syndrome. The more I learned, the more I realized I face the same challenges. The assessment confirmed my assumption. I am definitely ADHD.

In hindsight, I can see this is something I have been struggling with most of my life--difficulty with organization, follow-through, procrastination, details, difficulty focusing and staying on task, ideas/info "pinging" in my head, etc. Too often I have been paralyzed and unable to "push through" regardless of vision, my good intentions and my desire to complete a task/project well and on time. Although I have been been somewhat successful in both my personal and professional life, this is what has eluded me and often left me "undone". We are trying some medication. I started the taking Vyvanse 20 mg. last week and will increase to the prescribed dose of 30 mg. tomorrow. I am hopeful. Already my thoughts seem so much clearer.

I would welcome any feedback as I begin this journey.

Thank you!
