10 yr old very hyper and argumentative even on meds
Hi! I am new to this post and hoping someone can help me with my son. He is 10 years old and was diagnosed ADHD when he was 5. We started meds in kindergarten and he is now in 4th grade. We have an IEP and he does amazingly well, given how distracted and impulsive he is. He currently takes Concerta 54 mg+Ritalin 10 mg along with .05 mg of Clonidine in the am before school. He then gets .25 mg of Clonidine at lunch. For school he at least behaves himself pretty well. He has to have inclusion special ed help to make sure he stays on task. When he gets home, he takes 20 mg of Ritalin for homework and after school activities and then at bedtime .1 mg of the Clonidine. While this regimen is getting him through the school day with minimal behavior problems (alot of social problems, though and I am sure if the meds were right he would be able to do more on his own), my time with him before and after school is a nightmare. He wakes up at 5 am every day (even on the weekends and during the summer) wired for sound, jumping around, spinning, making loud noises and being totally disruptive to the whole family. He refuses to fix himself breakfast and cannot be trusted to take his meds (besides, if he takes it that early it only wears off earlier). Then, even when he gets his meds at 6:30 or 7 am they still wear out by the time I pick him up from school at 3pm. The "booster dose" does little to calm him - back to noises, jumping on furniture and then at 7:30 pm the backtalking and arguing kick in. Behavior modification has been time outs, losing privileges, etc., but to know avail. He gets plenty of exercise, good diet, etc. All this behavior is seeming to get worse, not better as he gets older and I am getting more frustrated. Any advice would be appreciated. |
