LD Adult Child getting married-Incapable

Very "young" 21 year old daughter getting married to addict. How do I protect our assets which will go to her as she is our only child? Daughter is impulsive & incapable of handling estate matters & I do NOT want addict husband to get anything. We think he is only marrying her b/c of inheritance later on. Her perception impairment clouds her from making good decisions. She is off Concerta & seeks no therapy for 3 years now.

The only thing you can do

Is change or will and her inhertiance . Rewrite it and make sure you have a lawyer sign it. If you are serious about keeping this money away from the addict . He will spend it and take her for a ride in a years time and if you really love her. without just making a stink which I wouldn't do but do the above he will see that she isn't get money and see how fast he will leave her if he is in it only for the money. This is not a easy thing to do especially since she is an only child; but no law in the land says you must leave her everything. good luck and be strong

See a lawyer

I suggest that you see a lawyer about drawing up a will. Depending on where you live & the amount of your assets, you may be able to set up a trust. The lawyer would be able to tell you if the trust could be structured in such a way that your daughter & her husband couldn't "blow through it".

Also, it might be possible to have it (a trust) set up in such a way that if she & her husband get a divorce, he couldn't get any of the money or property held in the trust. A lawyer who deals in estate planning & wills should be able to help you out.
