My son just had his first panic attack

I have panic disorder. I was hoping my son wouldn't get it too. It started he said his brain hurt, and he had a headache. Then he said he felt nervous, confused, and scared at the same time, for no reason. I held him, with his blanket and stuffed animal, we listened to quiet music, I made him a glass to tea and gave him a bach flower essences rescue remedy, and had him smell a calming lavender essential oil inhaler. My husband got him about ten minutes later, and he used distraction saying we'd take him to "kid fit" (they have basketball, dodgeball...) and asked him if he wanted to play his ipod, and made him laugh. That seemed to bring him out of the panic attack. I'm going to call his doctor in the morning and get him in to see her. He already has a psychiatrist appointment, but he has to wait 2 1/2 months from now. I was ready to take him to the ER. I know how horrible panic attacks are.

Panic Attacks

I bought "Attacking Anxiety and Depression," by Lucinda Bassett many years ago and we did the course as part of our Home School curriculum. She is really good and will definitely help you and your son get through panic attacks. She made a relaxation tape that you can listen to before bed or when anxious, where you will learn to calm yourself. My kids and husband have it on their MP3 players; me too. Also, we learned to watch what we eat. Foods with artificial dyes and even milk or any other food that your son might be allergic to can cause a panicky feeling. It is a process of elimination. I can not eat white sugar. I start feeling panicky, worried and depressed almost immediately after ingesting; eg. candy. You will feel so relieved once you gain control over what is causing the panic hence finding the solution to getting rid of the symptoms. Here is Lucinda's website. http://www.stresscenter.com/mwc/ I used to not be able to go anywhere without feeling fearful of everything bad that might happen. I enjoy vacations now and other trips. I still have no desire to, fly in an airplane, but I go places and do things with more ease now. I am going to take out her course again and get refreshed because I have had some issues with panic lately so I am glad I read your post. Her info is timeless and the beauty of her program is you can take a refresher in the comfort of your own home. After the course the Midwest center will call you and try and get you to buy more advanced programs or phone counseling. If you need it fine. If not, say no thanks. It's easy! Blessings! Mrs Z.
