7yr Girl - Very Argumentive in Sports

Hey Everyone. We have been trying to integrate our 7yr old into sports over the past 2 years in hopes of providing her with life skills with working in the team dynamic. Our goal was to allow her to socialize with kids in her own age group so that should could relax and feel part of something bigger than herself. Well, to say the least, the goal has proven to be loftier than the result. Our daughter tends to boss around her teamates and opposing players, to argue with coaches, referee's, teamates, and the opposing team. We thought soccer and basketball would help her since they are fast action at this age and allow her to move within game. She loves both sports and has excelled, but the anger at any small corrections in coaching, a failed score, leads to a total emotional breakdown in the game, which leads us to have to confront her in front of her peers. We have had her on Strattera for over a month now, but the ODD symptoms have seemed to have increased in sports and school over the last few weeks. There just seems to be small trigger points that set her off, either small failures, or subtle changes in the routine. We are working with her positive behaviour techniques, but when the outburts occur in the middle of an event with 100's of eyes watching, it is very difficult to find a positive spin. I would like to hear from others who might have experienced these same issues in sports. We don't have a solution yet, but we are working with her coaches on behavior modifications to help her be self aware of how her actions impact others and how they see her now.

argumentative in sports

Your daughter probably has some OCD and/or anxiety along with her ADD. You probably know that ADD rarely travels alone. We even saw these same behaviors when we played games as a family at home. We tried some generic Zoloft to help with the anxiety that is provoked when things don't go our daughters way, and it helped.
