My child thinks I hate him

I am so ashamed to say this but I must be the worst mother on the planet. My 7yr old son asked me the other day if I hated him. My heart broke---I love my son with everything, but most of the time I do not like him. He is aggressive, defiant, argumentative, and loud. He wont comply with the simplest request and battles me on everything. He hasnt been diagnosed but I cant imagine it can be anything else but ADHD and maybe some defiant disorder.

I am at my sits end...I need help, support, and advice. I am in my last semester of graduate school and all I want is to graduate. I feel so overwhelmed and alone. I am in the process of getting him into the pediatrician to get a diagnosis.

I have tried behavior charts and taking away privileges/toys but nothing seems to work. I believe he said this to me because I can feel my attitude toward him being dismissive and annoyed, He talks ALL the time and takes forever to tell the simplest story---I have no patience with his attitude. I dont want to spank because I dont think he can help it; his father is in denial and blames all his behavior issues on me.

HELP

ADHD Self Esteem

Please don't be so hard on yourself. You have a lot going on and no one has endless amounts of patience. I'm sure you aren't the worst mother in the world. And you can't be blamed for all of your son's issues.

It could just be that your son is suffering a bout of low self esteem. He doesn't realize what is happening, he just thinks everyone dislikes him. Here are some tips that might help give him a confidence boost (and give your parenting skills a confidence boost as well):

I hope this helps. Dena

ADHD Self Esteem

I agree with Dena you should not beat yourself up--actually I am in a similar situation with my son (9 yrs old)--he was diagnosed last year with ADHD--he is trying medications--I did not want to medicate but had no choice--his attitude recently has worsened --with school --at home--he is agitated often--and thinks I hate him. My heart breaks alittle more every time he saids that but I don't show it to him--just reassure him that I love him immensely and give him some time alone to relax. I am in the process of changing meds again--I tried taking him off the meds for a while recently but received a call from the school that his behavior worsened--so in as much as I hate giving him meds--I have no choice--however, I will advise you to just keep telling your son that you love him--praise his efforts--and most importantly--listen to anything he has to say. Hope this helps :)

hate

My son is 8 and tells me almost on a daily basis that I hate him, that he thinks I wish he were never born, and so on. He has been on meds on and off for four years, we've tried everything. It is hurtful, but I know he says it out of anger and frustration. I try to tune him out when he starts talking like this. I find if I respond it only fuels his fire, if I ignore him it passes pretty quickly. I hope things get better for you!
