I have AD/HD and I have just been fired. Anybody else w/ ADHD been fired?

I just got fired from a job that started off great then became a nightmare w/ management change. I just want to know what can or should I do next. I have a degree but I could not get work in my major. So I temped for 5 years and got hired as admin assist for 2.5 years Plus I would like to know if there are any people out there with the same experience?

been fired?

Jan, I've been there. That's why I choose to work from home. But that has a lot of challenges to. You should check out the Vocational Rehabilitation Service's in your area, They work with employees who hire people with disabilities. They also offer apprentice work ( on the job training), they may supply you with equipment to work from home, and funds for education. It maybe worth your time to check into it. I am currently going to school to finish my degree, and applying for work at home positions from VR. Trust in GOD he will see you thru this. He's right on time always.

I have ADHD and have also just been fired.

I was a firefighter for several years. they let me go late Nov. and I have two little ones and a disabled wife. So this has hit us really hard. But I also believe that God is doing something here. I haven't found work yet so I'm trying to take the time to learn more about ADHD. Because I was like a lot of people, not taking it seriously. I wasn't taking any meds or doing any therapy. The more I read, especially on this site, the more I'm realizing that ADHD is more than just a memory problem. It contributes to the way we think, and how we think.

I am 55 yrs. old and just now discovering myself.

I have an employment average of about 4 to 5 years per job over 30 years. As I've gotten older and gained more experience, the jobs I've applied for and been hired to fill, have gotten more responsible so, in my last two job, I've had some major problems and left one to avoid being fired and then, in my most recent job, I was caught in a lay-off which moved me out of the company but I feel quite guilty about the mess I left behind. Only during this period of unemployment since my lay-off, have I been working with a psychiatrist and a therapist to determine what has been affecting me during my adult life. We seem to think I have ADHD, inattention type. I take meds and tried therapy but I haven't found a therapist that I like. Only in the last few days, have I started searching the Internet for more information. I hope I can find something that pays enough to satisfy me without the stress and embarassment of the mistakes I've made over the past ten years. Best of luck to you and everyone who reads this.

Know what you mean..

I know what you mean. I was caught up in a lay off about 3 months ago for a company I've been with for 16 years. I have a daughter who has ADHD which made me knowledgeable about kids with it, but not much about adults. Since I had a job, I really didn't think much about it. I had the hardest time trying to get organized and look for another career, even as I saw the business laying off others. I'm 45 and just found out I have ADHD inattentive type. It made sense when I looked back over my life in school, hs, college, and working on projects and putting that together with what I learned and the psychologists diagnosis. Working on putting organization, decluttering, and building supportive relationships. The 7 Habbits of Highly Effective People is a good read and relate.

I was fired a year ago

I was fired a year ago and even left my family here in NJ to take work in AZ. I refused to sign paper that is the first thing because I would not give up my rights to unemployment and then I called my union boss and it took over a year but now I am in NJ and will be returning to my fulltime position without losing my benfits and things. Hopefully they didn't teminated you into resigning because then you gave up all your rights. Many states are the right to work and they suck in my opinion because employers can let you go for any reason they see fit. If you work in a state like NJ or NY you can go to labor board of the state , hire a lawyer etc and get ready for a fight of your life. They will druge everything up from the time you were written up for being late too often or sick calls. If you get your job back keep abook with you and date and time every interaction with the higher ups. I think with the unemployment in this country it is going to be very hard to find the money you are use to being paid. If you can't find fulltime accept parttime, call friends and contacts, networking is important. I know it is hard to face the day each morning and don't let the worrying get you into a state of panic and inaction. Keep your faith things have a way of working out. If money get tight let the credit cards go, pay the mortgage, the food , lights elecitricity and thiose things first , work a deal out with credit cards . Go to local churches for help with clothing and food, go to unemployent and get signed up. I know here in NJ we have food stamps and things like that time to let the pride be put aside and do what you need to do for you and your family. I have such a strong faith in God/Goddess that thing would work out. I know how heart wrenching being fired is. I cried when I left my daughter and husband here in NJ to go somewhere where I wasn't accepted because I am from the northeast and my ADD way which is way to upfront for some people. My union boss did say I was like a pit bull I wouldn't let go; most people after a few months would have given up. I felt I needed and was going to be heard and what ever happened happen for a reason. I learned allot about myself those months in AZ some of them will be very useful as I continue to age. Good Luck You will find your voice and you will make noise so everyone will know you and how amazing strong you will find yourself. (Judi)
