Binge eating?

My 8 year old son is "ADHD" though his actual diagnosis is "hyper-kinetic disorder with lowered impulse control" he's just purely hyperactive. He has responded very well to straight Ritalin with minimal side effects. We're lucky, i know this.

But for the last year he has been sneaking large amounts of food into his room at night and binge eats. We've tried everything, both positive and negative reinforcement, having "anytime snacks" that are healthy, even ignoring it!!. He has a good appetite even on meds so calories aren't the issue. I know it's more an impulse control issue. He literally eats anything and everything but always confesses and seems to feel badly about it. Luckily the HK burns off the calories, he's exactly at 50% weight so his health isn't an issue.

Has anyone come across this? Any ideas???

Thanks to all, Kate

We have not. My son (12 years old) responds well to meds too (Concerta) but he didn't eat much. Instead, he would eat a lot at night when the medicine wore out, but he would never sneak anything (that we knew of). We are trying the patch (Daytrana) to see if this helps his appetite as he is underwieght at the moment.
