Alternative ADHD Treatments: What Works for You?

Hi Everyone, Like ADHD medications, the effectiveness of alternative treatments varies from person to person. I am curious to hear which alternative treatments have worked for you and/or your ADHD child. How well have specific alternative treatments worked compared to traditional ADHD medications you have tried?

Sharing this kind of information could be very helpful for users of this forum seeking an effective ADHD treatment.

Thanks for your posts, Dena

Epsom salt

I have been trying to help my sister find alternative treatments for my niece that has adhd for the last couple of years after we both decided that the medications were not producing the desired effect or had too many side effects. The best alternative that we have found to date is soaking her in epsom salt before bed. The magnesium in the epsom salt has been found to ease hyper activity and help improve sleep. Currently my sister has been using Pepsom Sports epsom salt because my niece likes the spearmint scent. She soaks her in a warm bath with 2 cups of pepsom before bed and we have found that she is better able to sleep and therefore much less irritable the following day. My niece also seems to be able to focus at school better after starting this routine.

I would be interested in knowing if others have tried epsom salt for their adhd children and what their results were. Hope this helps some people! Have a wonderful new year!

epsom salt baths

I know this is a really old thread, but I just wanted to say I am an adult diagnosed with adhd. I take 30 mg Adderall XR per day. Lately (within the last year or so) it hasn't been helping me as much as it previously had. I have a couple of other health issues, and one of them causes my homocysteine levels to be higher than normal. Homocysteine regulates inflammation and stress. High homocysteine levels can cause things like ADHD, blood clots, migraines etc. (all of which I have). Anyway, in an attempt to do whatever I can naturally to lower my homocysteine level, I have been taking extra b vitamins. That helped somewhat. I was still getting bad migraines & read that magnesium (and epsom salts in particular) can lower homocysteine levels and do all sorts of good things. I have been taking an epsom salt bath for 45 min per night for one week now. From the very first bath I felt an intense sense of calm & relaxation. Throughout the next day I felt unusually comfortable in my clothes, and in a good mood. My anxiety is at an all time low. Today, I woke up EXTREMELY well rested after only 6 hours of sleep and honestly felt like I didn't need to take my Adderall. I kept forgetting to take it. Not because I was so distracted, but because I didn't feel like I needed it right when I woke up. This was the first time in four years I didnt reach for it first thing upon waking. I think I have stumbled upon a miracle.
