College Athlete with ADHD

I have a daughter who is on a full athletic scholarship at a very competitive university. She also is on a national team for the USA. It seems every coach likes her at first, then starts to dislike her, give her less playing time, yell at her, etc. She is able to hyperfocus during her games unless they are easy games. Then she is "out in left field"! She was recently diagnosed with ADHD by the university doctors. How should I approach her coach about this? Anybody know of some good reading materials I can give the coach to help her understand? Thanks much!

ADHD Information

I suppose "being out in left field" wouldn't be a bad thing if your daughter played outfield for a softball team.

You might want to checkout our printables for your daughter's coach.

Also, if you just start browsing the ADHD Basics section, you are sure to hit on something that will be helpful in explaining the diagnosis, including information about hyperfocus.

I hope this helps, Dena

College services

She should see both the college disability services office, and someone in the counseling center. (I do the former job)She may be entitled to accommodations that could help out a great deal. The counseling center can help her with focus and attention skill building and/or exploring the possibility of medication. Many effective meds can be taken only as needed and make a huge difference. If the diagnosis was made without a full psychological evaluation or utilizing a recognized ADHD evaluation tool, she should have that done as well - by a good psychologist. Often there are other associated issues, like learning disabilities, or sometimes there is misdiagnosis and it is something else, like depression or an auditory processing disorder. Be sure she had a good, thorough evaluation, not just somebody she saw for a 5 minute appointment. That will come with further recommendations for intervention.
