Could my 11-year-old son have ADHD?

I think I may be in denial because I already have one child with ADD (a 16-year-old daughter). But I see my son doing a lot of the same things she did at his age. First of all his grades have been going steadily downhill for a couple of years. At first I blamed it on the private Catholic school he was attending: tons of homework, tough grading scale, etc., etc. This year I switched him to another private school. While they have less homework it is still an academically challenging school.

I have been surfing this site and reading a lot of the posts. His handwriting, like some others have mentioned about their children, is atrocious. Doing homework at night is a nightmare! What should only take about an hour to do turns into 2 - 3 hours. Also, his teacher is complaining that he is talking too much in class. Should I get him evaluated by a child psychologist? I hate to think I might have another child with ADHD. I am really struggling with my daughter who is not doing well in school either

Help!!!

sounds familiar

Your 11 year old son sounds like my 12 year old son. I too thought it was the challenging catholic school but have moved him to public school this year and things are even worse. Which is what finally prompted me to have my son evaluated. Since ADHD is genetic, I would definitely have him evaluated. Better to know than keep on guessing.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I guess I am going to have to do that.
