Newly Diagnosed 3-year-old - Open to Strategies and Tips

Hi everyone! My three year old has always been a little different. My husband and I have blamed many different things for his behavior, from our parenting skills to trouble with ear infections. Nothing could ever quite solve or remedy his consistent problems.

Our school offers a 3 yr old Pre-K and we decided he really needed the extra year or two in Pre-k before heading to Kindergarten from a private sitter. He doesn't adjust well to change, so we felt dropping him right into kindergarten would cause riotous behavior.

Now that he is in school, he is having trouble focusing, disrupting class, all the typical ADHD symptoms. It was not until we had him in this structured environment that we began to realize it was something more than normal toddler, boyhood behavior.

Since school started, we've obtained an official diagnosis and are now working to correct, control, etc without medication. We have several major issues of concern, as all parents of ADHD children do. Our areas include: difficulty getting to sleep and staying there, distraction or lack of focus in class, impulsivity, hyperactivity, etc.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to deal with ADHD in a child this young without medication or any strategies in solving problems that become huge stumbling blocks during any given day, we'd love to hear them.

Maybe try a new preschool

Maybe you need to find another preschool that is not so structured? Our preschool allowed my son to stand during circle time as long as he remained quiet and at the back. He was also allowed to fidget during reading time, mostly by holding a small toy in his hand. Sometimes the teacher would have him sit by her so she could keep bringing his attention back to the lesson. All of these things they did without our suggesting it, they allowed the children to work within the boundaries they set for each situation. But there are a number of good preschool options. Some preschools in our area focus on being outdoors for a huge part of everyday. A cooperative preschool is also another option where you can assist in the class so that you can help your son find ways to be less disruptive. Montessori preschools can also be a good where they allow the children to focus on things that interest the child with gentle direction from the teachers.

Three year olds?

They certainly are getting younger with this diagnosis. I pray you do not succumb to educator pressure and medicate your three year old child. The brain of a three year old cannot handle powerful ADHD stimulants. Moreover, do not blame yourself.

Research The Nurtured Heart Approach. It is a revolutionary strategy used with difficult children.

your could be talking about me :o)

We thought "what did we do wrong" the entire toddler/preschool years. finally at age 5, after 2 doctors and a child psychologist all agreed, we got a diagnosis of hyper-kinetic and to us it was a relief. At least finally we got that it wasn't anyone's fault (except my genes as i'm sure he got it from me). By then we'd had a 2nd son and when we realized that he wasn't at all like his brother, we knew that something was up.

I'm guessing you're wondering now what to do with it all..... We were lucky that our son was older so we used the summer before K to see how meds would work for him, but at three??? Not sure what the docs will do. When/If you do decide to try meds, know that it may take several tries to find the one that works for your child. We eventually ended up on Ritalin, we have to give it 3x a day but it gives him no side effects so....

Good luck to you, once it's managed (whatever you decide to try) it's an amazing thing to see... it'll be your child but on level 6 instead of 12 lol
