How do I Know if Medication is Right for my Son?

I am the mother of a 15 year old with ADD and probably some other issues (depression, anxiety). He has been taking Zoloft and has done pretty well, but really struggles in school. He is very bright and in all advanced classes, but doesn't turn in homework - either doing it and forgetting to turn it in, or just drifting around the house all afternoon and evening and not doing it at all. I feel he gets overwhelmed by the stress and burden of school and his downward-spiraling grades, then doesn't know how to catch up and so just gives up. I cannot decide whether to put him on a stimulant medication because he's not "hyperactive" in the traditional sense. But he sure seems to share a lot of the behavior issues that I've seen discussed in these forums (organization, grades, homework, oppositional behavior...). Any advice?

ADHD Medication Information

That is a question you should discuss with your son's doctor. But it won't hurt to do a little research on the options so you can make a more informed decision. Here are some articles that might help:

Zoloft and Adderall

My daughter takes Zoloft and Adderall XR. She has anxiety/OCD and ADHD. The Zoloft has been great for her and she says she notices a big difference if she doesn't take the Adderall. Especially if its a school day. She is 15 years old.

Zoloft, ADD

This sounds so much like my 13 year old son. He is on Zoloft for depression too. He was diagnosed with ADD (no hyperactivity) and Childhood Absence Epilepsy. With both of those it is like "double ADD". It is hard to know if he is in a fog at school because of the ADD, absence seizures (Petit Mal) or side effects from the medications. I am seeing the same issues at school. He did very well when he first started Concerta 3 years ago but we had to take him off of it in December because of severe frequent meltdowns and stammering. Now the doctor wants to try guanfacine (Tenex). With his being on the Zolof,t and Lamictal for seizures, I was hoping he could maybe do without a med for the ADD but it has become clear that is not going to work. He is lost, his work is lost and he has gone from A's to F's. Anyone else out there with a similar combination of issues?
