A family affair
I have been diagnosed with ADD, my 2 younger brothers are ADD but undiagnosed, my mom was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and my dad has mental things too but he is undiagnosed. So, YES, it is possible to have a family full of mental disorders. I'm living proof! The problems come when we use our individual coping mechanisms and try to communicate expecting the other people in the family to read our minds and operate with the same coping mechanisms we do. It doesn't work that way... we've learned (the hard way sometimes) that we need to communicate constantly to keep up with each other. My boyfriend is ADD, PTSD, OCD, and recently diagnosed with borderline personality on top of it all. So, even in our home life we are learning every day to cope with ourselves and communicate with each other. We have safe words like "STOP" when we start to ramble, argue, or think out loud too much. When we hear that, we both stop, separate, and chill out. Then in 5-10 minutes we can resume talking or driving or whatever it was. Try safe words. They work really well... but the whole family has to agree that that is the safe word or else it may come off as an insult or a challenge when someone says "STOP" to you.
