How to help a hyperactive 3 year old in Sunday school

I just started being a 1 on 1 with a 3 year old little girl in her Sunday School class. This position was required because she has no attention span and runs all over the room with delayed social skills. She is a cute little girl but needs extra help. Our goal is to get her to sit and listen to the stories and songs without jumping on the other kids and running around the room and wanting to continue playing with toys. Last week was a challenge because she started to throw a tantrum when she was requested to stay in one spot. We really want to keep her in the class rather than call her parents and interupt their worship time but I don't know how to accomplish this task. She does well when supervised at the table and when she gets to do what she wants to do. Last week I took her away from the circle and made her sit in the chair at the table (still not happy but controllable) Her parents are all about choices but she doesn't seem to listen to her options in this situations. Please, any other suggestions? We want her to enjoy Sunday School but adjust her social skills.

3 year old with ADHD in SS class

I am an occupational therapist who works with children like this. Here are a few ideas: 1) Let the child wear a backpack with some supplies in it that weighs about 4lbs or so. The weight of the backpack may help her to calm and focus. 2) Let her push or carry some heavy objects around prior to SS class. You can make up a task such as helping you carry a pile of books to another level. Movement breaks that involve input to muscles and joints are calming. 3)Give her something to hold on to and fidgit with when she is expected to sit. 4) Give her frequent movement breaks, letting her take a break to go to the bathroom for a few minutes and then bring her back to task. These are just a few ideas to get you started. I will try to check back into this forum soon and see if you have made any progress.
