Doesn't Care One Bit!! Very Annoying

My son is a 6th grader. He is giving me big problems with his studies.

When he was young he used to listen to me and study and score pretty ok. But lately, he has just stopped listening to me.

I mean, I tell him that I'll allow him more time to play if he studies one more chapter. He says ok and starts studying and then after like 10 minutes he starts losing interest and then he doesn't even read the chapter he was supposed to read, much less another additional one.

I give him consequences and rewards and whatever not to motivate him but to no avail. It's like he's turned into a new person totally who just wouldn't listen and nothing is working on him.

I am really stressed out because I can't seem to handle him and he'll be entering his teens pretty soon. He's eleven right now. I'm a single parent. Please does anyone have any ideas on how to get him under control and make him responsible about his studies.

Awaiting suggestions!! Kate

helping him learn

have you had him tested for add / adhd - have you had his eyes and hearing examined - sometimes kids lose interest becuase they fall behind - they cant hear the teacher or see the board so they just start to give up. alternatively there is the add/adhd question - i have a 13 year old who was impossible about doing any school work without huge arguments, bribes etc. he was tested in grade 2 and was questionable for attention problems. finally in grade 6 we had him retested and he was put on meds for concentration - helped a lot - and i think it made him more confident in his school work so he was willing to get it done. also, what type of learner is your son, some kids just cant sit down and read a chapter - i mean that would make me crazy too. between you and school resources determine what type of learner he is - does he need more visual or hands on type learning. the way information is presented to him may make all the difference - there are so many options - my son got a laptop for school in grade 7 and it has been a lifesaver -the programs help him learn they way his brain needs to instead of forcing him to get with the flow. talk to you doctor if you have nto already and talk to the school - you have to advocate for your child and dont let them turn you away there are a world of optoins out there for him.
