Starting Fish Oil

On the recommendation of both the doctor and teacher, we are trying fish oil with my 5 year old. For anyone who has tried this path:

Any recommendations on an actaul product? We bought the Nordics Natural EPA, because of the ratio. But, the capsule is huge. So I'm sticking a pin in it, getting out the oil and mixing it with apple juice. Seems like there must be an easier, less messy way!

How long did it take to see changes?

Any other recommendations?

Essential Fatty Acids

I like Nordic Naturals because it is the only fish oil I have found that doesn't leave an "aftertaste" for hours after taking it. But I agree, the capsule is big for a child. Another suggestion is Flax Oil (also high in EFAs) I have taken that with good results. You can purchase it at health food stores as a liquid. I mix it into smoothies and juice (sometimes I just take a spoonful, but it is a bit rich).

You might try flavored fish oil that can be mixed into shakes or juice. According to the experts, one-half to one gram per day seems to be the right dosage for most children. The oil you purchase should contain a roughly 4:1 ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids.

I hope this helps. Dena

We use Carlson's "The Very Finest Fish Oil" lemon flavor

We picked that because it had a much higher ratio of EPA to DHA per teaspoon. We use the liquid not pills, 2.5 pills equals only 1 teaspoon of liquid which means we'd be opening a lot of pills each day. For our sons we mixed 3 teaspoons with 1/4 c. applesauce or yogurt. But now they actually prefer to just drink it straight with a quick orange juice chaser! Blah! I put it over my salad instead of olive oil and have never noticed a fish taste or after taste. It also is good over vegetables or mixed into mashed potatoes/squash etc. but its much harder to control portions. As for noticing a difference we haven't noticed a huge difference but enough studies have proven that it really helps developing brains and a host of other things in older adults that our entire family now takes either the liquid or pill form. The studies that I've seen that have focused only on ADHD have been mostly with huge doses (8-12 teaspoons per day) of fish oil which is just too hard to replicate. I do think it makes easier for myself to concentrate and it doesn't have side effects so other than the cost there really are no downsides for our family. I must say that we give it to our dog (3 pills per day for a 50lb dog) and it REALLY has improved his coat! By the way Vitacost had good prices on fish oil.

Starting Fish Oil

Awesome Amy - I started fish oil with my son in May. I have noticed improvement with both his hyperactivity and focus... I use Nordic Naturals Junior 3-6-9 which has a higher EPA ratio to DPA. I give him a 1/2 tsp a day, along with Nordic Natural nordic berries, which include other essential vitamins /nutrients. I does take some time to see a difference, and I notice when we didn't give it to him for 3 weeks thru the summer, he was closer to who he was without the fish oil. I noticed after about 4 weeks of taking the oil that he was finishing more of his classwork and was focusing better on homework. However, we started this in May and school year was almost over. Back to school now, 2nd grade, and we'll see how he does the first quarter. The fish oil was also recommended by my pediatrician and she told me that it is working for many of her patients. So give it a try..The worst that will happen is he will have a good healthy, heart.

We use Carlson's also...

...in liquid form. Surprisingly, my son -the VERY picky eater-, has no problem getting it down. We buy the lemon flavored. I've also inquired about another fish oil brand named Efalex which apparently has good Omega 3;6 ratios. I thought I'd read either on their website (or elsewhere) that one promotes absorption of the other. When I asked the naturopath we see about this he said that it really doesn't matter; he will get the Omegas he needs. Any one know more about this??

Fish Oil

I read about giving adhd kids fish oil in a parents magazine, I wish I had known about it years before. We use Nordic Naturals because a naturepathic dr. we went to said it had the highest DHA ratio and b/c it's very pure. You have to be very careful with fish oils b/c of mercury. Nordic Naturals is one of less than a handful of brands that is extremely pure. We use the lemon liquid as well and I just mix it into my son's juice along with a very high qualify multi-vitamin and some liquid magnesium/calcium supplement as well. The dr. said adhd kids are missing a lot of high quality vitamins and the ones you buy at the regular store that's a 'gummie' version is garbage. These kids need high quality vitamins and they need to be quick absorbing. Those hard flinstone type vitamins and gummies rarely absorb so the kids aren't getting what they need out of them.
