I'm Excited and Apprehensive

I called my insurance company, and found out that ADD/ADHD is covered! They gave me the phone# for a counselor in my town, not far from me at all, for 3 free assessment visits, and I also called my Primary Care Physician, and I have an appointment with him on Friday to get a referral from him. So it looks like I'm on my way to finding out how to curb my ADD before it does any more damage, or at least to have it officially confirmed.

I'm excited about this, but, also a bit apprehensive. What if it isn't ADD, what if it's something else, what if I have to go on meds for the rest of my life? Can I really stop these outbursts and other problems?

Is there really hope, really help for me?

Congratulations

Congratulations on taking that big first step. The more you know about ADHD diagnosis, the less anxious you will feel. Do a little research about ADHD and treatment and medication options so you can make the most of your time with the doctor and make an informed decision about the next steps of your treatment.

I took the first step today.

Well, I went and talked to my dr. today. I described all my symptoms, and told him I wondered if I had ADD. He said that's highly unlikely at my age. He said the symptoms I have could also be from anxiety, depression, or Alzheimers. He also said, if it was ADD, all the recommended meds, except Straterra would be counter-indicated at my age because of the dangers of high blood pressure and heart problems as side effects. He was willing to refer me to a counseling center, though, and said he would be willing to work with them. So, I did get what I was looking for, anyway, the referral.

Excited and Anxious

Gemini62--

Good for you! Keep in mind that not all primary physicians are familiar with ADD/ADHD, especially if they primarily treat adults. ADD/ADHD has long been thought to only affect children, so the concept of Adult ADD/ADHD is foreign even to those within the medical community. A good psychiatrist can spot the clues and make the diagnosis and offer medication suggestions that won't interfere with your other health conditions. You might also try to hook up with a support group--ask about this at the counseling center. My son has ADHD and I likely have it as well. I got a lot out of meeting other adults with this problem who could help me and help my son by telling us what strategies were helpful for them. Good luck!

I have a counseling appointment!

The counseling center called me today! I have an appointment set for Sept. 29th. So, that's another step toward diagnosis. It can't come too soon for me. I've had this long enough, without really knowing what to do about it. I'm just very thankful I found this web site, and this forum. You've all been so helpful. :)
