Is Getting Worse Normal?

I've noticed that my frustration level and my temper are getting worse at work. Is it normal for the ADD symptoms to get worse, after realizing that's what I have, or am I just becoming more aware? One thing I have noticed is that I'm worse in the morning, and don't really get better until after lunch, or if I have time for a mid-morning snack. It seems to be connected with blood sugar crashes, because after I eat something with protein, even a few handfuls of peanuts, I am in a better mood, and can focus better. Have any of you noticed anything similar?

Take a break

Yes, I can relate to that increased frustration and temper. I think it is just more self awareness which is a good thing. When I notice this, at times I find it helpful to think purposefully about something positive, like an upcoming event or I take a break and go for a walk to the market by my work to get a snack and have some alone time. I think the mid morning break definitely helps.

My Job Won't Let Me Escape!

Maria, I like what you said about taking a walk to the market to get a snack. I'd love to do that, but I'm only allowed 2 ten minute breaks a day, and 30 minutes for lunch. So there's no time for a nice walk to Target (the closest store to my job). As it is, I'm constantly in trouble for going over my break time, because I have some physical problems that sometimes cause more time in the bathroom. Besides, what idiot decided 10 minutes is enough time for a break! You have barely enough time to walk to the bathroom, use it, and then walk to the break room and eat a snack. I really think bathroom breaks should be off the clock entirely!

hi new here but your post is exactly how i been feeling. does ADD get worse as you get older? The forgetting things, loosing things, constantly feeling overwhelmed by simple things, sometimes i just want to sit and stare at a wall. i cant even watch tv anymore because i get totally zoned out to the things around me its weird. i have a 3 year old so my attention needs to be on her, things seem so overwhelming now her dad has moved away and im in a new relationship that on its own is a struggle, he has a child round the same age that another thing that is making me crazy, there are so many things really if i dont try and keep on top of things it all seems to overwhelm me, i dont know anymore what to do. I repeat myself, or i dont know what to say when i am trying to get something important across i really am freaking out, i think i just hi jacked your thread about something totally different, sorry.

sigh. some days i feel im in control of things other days i am so confused like my brain just isnt functioning. im afraid im loosing my mind

Relationship between food and focus

Do you eat breakfast? That seems to help me a lot. Low blood sugar can definitely cause lack of focus, among other things. Try to put yourself on a schedule and have a small snack every three hours or so, even if you're not hungry. Keep it healthy and small, but see if eating more often helps. If so, then your blood sugar is probably related to your focus.

I've noticed that my symptoms get worse with PMS and in the evenings when my medication wears off.

It might not hurt to keep a journal for a week or two to track your symptoms and things like sleep, food, and water. It doesn't have to be wordy - you can just list basic symptoms and put a number next to them at various times throughout the day. Then just write down the times you eat, what you eat, how much sleep you got, and how much water you drank.

I do think being more aware of your symptoms is part of it. Once I was diagnosed, I began to see symptoms that I hadn't noticed before or had become so used ot seeing that they weren't obvious. Being aware is a GOOD thing though - it will help you identify side effects of medication, how your enviornment impacts your symptoms, and what you can do to alleviate them.

Medication effectiveness

Some of the stimulants are not as effective if you take them at a meal with orange juice or another food with citric acid, and adderall is supposed to be taken with protein and a low fat meal. So that could affect how well the medication works.

I don't know if the citric acid affects the entire day or just the morning if you are on an extended release version.
