Horrible Reactions to Meds!

I have a 7 year old granddaughter that has ADHD. She has been on several different types of medication in the past year. No matter what she takes she starts to have horrible side effects from them. Late in the school year they were so bad that her doctors recommended a drug to take when she go home from school to help her wind down AND a drug - to help her go to sleep at night. I find this hard to understand and wrap my mind around this. I have raised children myself that were ADD and ADHD so I am not new to this. She has not been on anything all summer and was doing fine. Her problem was in school and it did bring her grades up a great deal to the point that it was shocking to her teacher how she improved. For the past couple of weeks her mother has started her back on them to prepare for school starting. The same behavior started all over again. Total out of control melt downs. She looks like a wild animal in her eyes when this happens. It takes at least 30 minutes to calm her down and it is pitiful to see her go through this -- knowing it is because of the medications. It happens with all the ones that have been tried on her. Once starting the medications she actually acts more hyper in the afternoons and evenings than she has all summer without any meds. We have talked to her doctors - all of them - and they say it is a trade off and some children have this type of reaction - thus - adding two more drugs. I spend a lot of time with her and I see what it is doing to her. There has got to be another way to handle this -- any suggestions? It is breaking our hearts!

Alternative ADHD Treatments

That is too bad. It sounds like the medication does more harm then good.

Some parents have great success with non-drug ADHD treatments such as supplements, changes in diet and other alternative ADHD treatments.

Since it sounds like she doesn't have behavior issues (other than when she is on the meds) she may benefit from alternative treatments.

Here are some informative articles that might help: Using Nutrients to Boost the ADHD Brain

If school is the problem, have you had her evaluated for a learning disability? She might benefit from accommodations at school.

I hope this helps? Dena
