Help..."Global" Learning Disablility??

My DD is 9 and was dx ADHD when she was 7. At the end of 2nd grade I knew she was getting further behind in her studies and was really struggling academically. She has gotten all the extra services she needed at school, and finally started to see that she is "delayed" when it comes to school. The 3rd grade she had fallen even further behind. Her difficulties are in, of course, reading, writing and math. She is at about the same academic level of my DS who is starting 2nd grade. It is in her IEP for all the resources she needs, the last IEP meeting was the last day of school. Here is the thing I don't understand. I can understand why with the dx of ADHD is classified as a Other Health Impairment. I made DD an appt with her psychologist to question about testing or something, to dx DD for a learning disability. The doc said she noted that my DD has a Global Learning Disability. Her words. What the heck does that mean? I felt she had basically given us the brush off. should I maybe take this up with the school instead? School has started here yet. The other thing is we are limited on resources here regarding docs, we are a military family stationed overseas, at a rather small installation, so changing dr.s isn't really possible.

I get the feeling that both through the docs and school and her IEP, that they are just accommodating us. That they will continue to let me DD fall further behind but keep moving her forward at school. To me it seems that every professional involved is just going through the motions so it looks good on paper, but not really helping my DD.

When DD was first dx'd she was at a wonderful school! We had a brief move to another school and we really liked them too. I didn't feel so frustrated. Now that we are overseas and not impressed with the school, and don't have any other options. I am basically lost at what I need to do to advocate for my child.

Aaaarrrggghhh..........other than this website, I have no one to talk to about this!

Thanks!

Global Learner

I am not your child's doctor, but perhaps the doctor was referring to your child's learning style? Determining how a child learns helps teachers and parents develop and teach strategies that work for a child's particular style.

For instance, Global learners need to see the big picture before they can focus on details, they tend to procrastinate, and prefers tests that require essays instead of a recital of facts.

Did you ask your doctor what she meant by "Global Learning Disability?" And what she recommends?

I hope this helps, Dena

"global" remark

It's not clear to me whether the doctor made the remark about global disablitiy after she did testing. Was diagnostic testing actually done? She might have meant, pre-testing, that your daughter has trouble with everything in school.

I think you should call the doctor back and ask what she meant. that's really the only way you will understand. You have every right to get an understandable explanation from any professional. That's what you go to them for.
