How Many Drugs Did You Have to Try to Find the Right One?!

My son is 6 years old and was diagnosed about 6 months ago with ADHD. He is very impulsive with very little self control. It gets him in trouble in social situations when he tells other kids they are "stupid" or hits them when they accidentally bump him, for example. He is a very sensitive child & demands a lot of other peoples attention. He gets frustrated when he doesn't receive it. He is extremely intelligent, testing in the top 1% for children his age. Okay, enough background. We decided to medicate & started with Vyvanse. It made him an emotional WRECK. It did control the ADHD symptoms at first. We tried 5mg & then 10mg. Too emotional. Then, we tried Focalin. No real relief of symptoms. Now we are trying Ritilan All Day and again, no real relief of symptoms. Yesterday he told my husband he hated him 3 x & tried to hit him twice.

Where do we go next? What meds should we try? Do we just up the dose of the Ritilan or Focalin and when do we say "definitely not working"? Is there a reference on all the drugs & how they might affect a child?

Thanks, KK

ADHD Meds and Side Effects

There is a wealth of information on this site about ADHD medication and side effects. Here are a few to get you started:

Also, this printable booklet about How to Use ADHD Medications might be helpful.

I hope this helps, Dena

ADHD Meds

It is important to make sure you have the right diagnosis. If there are other issues at hand causing these symptoms, the meds will not help. Please google "symptoms of candida overgrowth as well as leaky gut syndrome"-- was your child on a lot of antibiotics since birth--stomach issues will cause the same symptoms of ADHD. Also google, "B12 deficiency". You should read about and google more info on pyroluria --here is one link. http://www.diagnose-me.com/cond/C372380.html. A blood test can be done to find out if this is his issue. Also, thyroid problems can cause symptoms of ADHD. See the www.caddra.ca website for checklists and blood work your doctor should be doing to rule out any other medical issues. We have found a DAN! naturopathic doctor that recommended all the bloodwork our family doctor needed to do and we did some urine tests that discovered a host of issues as well as B12 deficiency. If you can find a DAN! ND doctor in your area, I highly recommend it.

first one was the charm!

Apparently, I was lucky enough to get the right medication for me on the first try.
