a lot to take in
My daughter was just dignosed with ADHD, combined and with dyslexia. She is 7 and we had a terrible year. She went through a lot of testing and had very long hours doing homework everynight. She has an IEP that the school did not always follow which were given in April and the 3 week of May the school told me that they wanted her to held back a year. I was heart broken. Not once did she give up. How could I tell her that they wanted her to repeat the first grade. I had to fight to get her tested because she was struggling so hard to read and understand math. I never thought we would end up with an ADHD diagnoses. I feel aweful and guilty. She is such a happy girl and funny. We have tried medication (Focalin,xr 10mg, 20mg) and it made her angry, sad and obsessive. Now we are trying Vyanse 20mg. We are so new at this that I am feeling so overwhelmed. I don't know what we are suppose to do now. |

Stay Strong
Nini: Stay strong for her. There is an excellent book called "Understanding Girls with ADHD". There are also books in the library that are written specifically for children at a childs level that helps them understand themselves and their own behaviors. Your child has been gifted with curiosity, energy and a headstrong personality if she has ADHD. Just continue to think that way and she will too. Although medication (once it's the right one) helps with concentration in the classroom and some social interactions, it won't eliminate all of the challenges of ADHD. Continue to research this site and put routines in place in your home that will give her a positive direction; like check lists. In all honesty it is likely not a bad thing that she is being held back a grade. My daughter is in grade 7 now and is easily a year behind in maturity. We wanted to hold her back a year when she was in grade 1 and chose not to. In hind site it would have been the better idea, because now it would be devastating for her, even though she really doesn't have a great deal of friends. Stay strong, stay positive and fight for her because you will come up against teachers in the future who will not always know what is in her best interests. Only you know that. |
