6th Grade and 5 Hours of Homework?

My grandson is a straight A student. He comes in from school has a snack bathroom break (he won't go at school) then starts homework no complaining. Sometimes he works 4 to 5 hrs, he erases many times until he thinks its neat or shaped correctly. My heart breaks for him because all he does during school week is homework, on the week ends he is allowed video time and cartoon time, any suggestions to get thru homework quicker? He almost never complains but I know it is bothering him. At the eog testing last year he came home so excited because first time ever he was not the last one finished however he did not score as high because he said he would rather score less and not be the last done than to be the one that the rest of the class waits for. He has always scored top 1% last year top 3%. How do you tell him to do his best and let him feel bad for taking so long? If we ask for special privilege he will be classified as LD and put in a class with other LD students and have this label. So we were advised to just overlook the time he takes and let him stick with it rather than have him labeled. Socially he is not 11 yrs old has a very hard time making friends. He is currently taking daytrana 40mg patches plus 10 mg ritalin first thing in morning and 1mg tenex for tics. Any advice would be helpful.
