College, Millitary & ADD Meds
My son is a senior in HS this year. He's been on ritalin since age 4 and recently switched to Vyvance <sp?) this past summer, due to high blood pressure. He's never missed a day of school, ever! He makes A's and B's most of the time. He'd like to attend a military college and possibly go into the Air Force. But I've been hearing stories that the Military won't take you if you are on ADD medication. He does so well and makes better grades.... I don't know what to do now. Should we try to wean him off his meds his senior year? Will a military college let you in if you take ADD meds? I never thought this would be an issue. If someone has high blood pressure they take medicine. Why would the Air Force discreminate if you have to have medication to keep you focused? Thank you, CC |

Military and ADHD
According to this article, Is There ADHD Discrimination in the Military?, ADHD has been one of the most restricted categories when it comes to enlisting for military service. ADHD by itself does not disqualify a person from the military, it places significant restrictions on enlisting. The comments posted at the bottom of the article are also very telling. I hope this helps. Dena |

What will they do in the future
Dena, thank you so very much for posting the link. I have to shake my head and just wonder. Sure, the responses have somewhat valid points. And, I would understand a case by case decision. I've never particularly wanted my son to join the military, but he thrives on all that "gun, macho" stuff and it interests him, so therefore he does manage to absorb everything "rambo" and excels. I have to wonder what the military will soon do in the future. As we all know, there are so many theories as to what causes ADD/HDD and I'm guessing the one thing we can all agree on is it isn't going away. I can't imagine that the military will be able to filter all these boys out.... and if they do... it will be their loss and a mothers gain. I have never met an ADD/HDD child who wasn't smart as a whip! A shame that my son will have a career choice taken away from him because he took meds to keep focused and obtain the good grades all these years. But given the choice between good grades, making and keeping friends, being able to focus and obtain an education.... vs just not being able to join the military.... hmmmmm ... again, their loss, my gain. Thank you! CC |
