ADHD Medication for an Ex Drug Abuser

Would I have never abused drugs in the first placed had I been medicated for ADHD? I have had ADHD all my life but I had no idea majority of it because my mother felt it best I just go on living as normal as can be without making me worry or think too much into it all the while NOT on medication. In high school I abused meth for 2 years and excessively drank alcohol and was eventually sent to rehab at 16. (I have read that drug abuse is at a much higher rate for people with ADHD, which is why I ask my question) I became clean and still am (4+ years) then I began seeing a therapist on my own three years ago because I realized that the people around me didn't seem to have minds as cluttered as mine nor did they have such a hectic high school experience, after speaking with the therapist he asked if I had ever been diagnosed with ADHD and he sent me to another doctor who then diagnosed me. I never followed up on the appointments and have since still been unmedicated. I now feel more than ever that I need help with my ADHD because it seems to have gotten worse and the relationships I have with people are quickly falling apart.

I would encourage you to make that appointment with the therapist immediately. It's good that you seem to have the necessary self-awareness to know that something is amiss and you need help. You're fortunate that you were finally diagnosed...there are many individuals who never get the support they need. Please do this...for your family, friends and yourself.

It is something you need to discuss with a therapist

The stimulants are very good for ADHD and it is probability that you did feel the need to self medicate that you abused Meth. I know when I was very young and I would say in my early teens "Black Beauties" were my drug of choice. I never knew I was ADHD; but I did know the stimulant was what made my mind feel like I could focus and not so day dreamy etc that goes along with my ADHD / I never would have started to take them if I was diagnosed :but back in 60'-70's it was just a boys diagnosis. I think if you were started on meds as youngster you would never had used street drugs. This is something you will need to discuss with a therapist ; and be honest about your past. The Ritalin, Adderall if given will be giving only monthly; but it will be dose only to help you focus . You should also have a therapist to discuss all the issues of your ADHD and see how you can help yourself and if there is a group you may want to join. If it is really getting in your way it something that needs to be treated and I really doubt you will abuse the drugs. There are so many different meds out there so it may not be even a stimulants that will be given. My psychiatrist put me on Ritalin and it works wonders and does know my favor of Black beauties in my very young youth. Take care and Good Luck.
