Teen Son Refuses to Take Meds for ADHD

Our teenage son has refused to take any meds or omega 3 fish oil for his ADHD. He now has his G1, and is learning to drive. Any ideas on how to get him to take his meds? Our GP mentioned in front of him last year that our son might outgrow ADHD, and since then he will not take any meds for ADHD. Our doctor admits that he doesn't know much about ADHD, but has said what our son wanted to hear. Even if our doctor did say our son should take his meds, he wouldn't as like I said, our son heard what he wanted to hear, and won't listen any further. Any ideas? He just barely passed grade 11. Thanks so much.

How about removing his driving privileges? Because my son is ADHD and, in my opinion, not yet ready for the 'privilege' of driving, he has not been allowed to get his permit. He will be 18 in March. Radical choice, maybe. Lifesaving, in my opinion, yes, for him and anyone else. He flys off handle too fast, he is hyper and would take speed and carelessness to extremes thinking he is just being a boy, not good choices. So he waits until he doesn't need me to sign for him anymore. Then he can pay his own insurance and buy his own car and be held responsible for his actions. He knows why, I have explained that w/barely passing grades, hyper, no meds. As his parent, (note: not his BFF) I have chosen that he does not need to have a drivers license at this time. He doesn't like my choices, as he has been asked by family members (w/o my knowledge/permission) about getting license, but abides by my decision until he is 18.

I agree that it is essential for everyone's safety that your son is able to fully focus while he is driving. ADHD symptoms can have an effect on teens and safe driving. I think you might appreciate these articles about ADHD Teens and Driving.

Great Ideas. The answer is so simple. Will talk to my husband about this. He doesn't like getting in the car with him anyway. He is taking driving lessons apart from my husband, so can't do much about that, but he won't be able to practice driving, which is important to him. Thanks so much.
