Metadate CD vs. Methylin

My son whose 9 is on a combination of both of the above meds. This summer, we've backed off both meds quite a bit compared to school year. The child psychiatrist says that these are basically the same medication. The Metadate CD is supposed to last all day but we started giving him the Methylin around 1pm (other taken at 8am) to carry through the rest of the school day. It seems when he takes the Metadate CD he's much more moody and talks about being bored more. The Methylin needs to be dosed every 3.5 hrs to lessen his impulsiviity and hyperactivity but the loss of joy bothers me from the Metadate CD. We've tried Strattera, Concerta, Adderall, the patch and now Ritalin. His trouble mostly comes when in big social groups -- even when they're "for fun" and not academic based. When we're at home, he's hyper but not terribly bothersome. When we go out, though, he becomes irrational and unable to be helped by adult guidance. Any ideas?

Feel your concern

Hi, Rita.

I feel your pain in seeting the I don't Care attitude. I have a 10 year old son who takes Metadate CD and 1/2 mg of guanfacine. We have had him off meds since school was out because his lack of appetitie caused him to lose 6 lbs when he should have gained 24 lbs after growing 4 inches. I thought all was going okay until I started to receive notes home from his summer daycare. He only goes 3 days a week, usually Mon, Wed and Fri and goes to my parents or my husband's parents the other days.

I came to the realization today that we need to start up on the meds again. The loss of appetite with the Metadate CD is what concerns me most. My family doesn't like to see him spaced out on the meds. At home, he seems okay as well. A bit hyper, but nothing out of control. However, group situations are another story. He just gets easily irritated then the lack of impulse control gets him into trouble. He seems remorseful after the incident.

So back to the meds on Monday. I had heard that Straterra might be a good one to try, but also know it takes a long time to get into the system (6 weeks).

Perhaps talk to your doctor about lowering the dose of Metedate CD and trying a bit of guanfacine, also known as Tenex. This drug is supposed to also help with impulse control and aggresion.

Each child is different. If is frustrating, I know, to figure out what works best. Good luck.

By the way, I am not a doctor, just another mom dealing with an ADHD child. :-)
