So overwhelmed, I want to cry

Hi there, I am new to the board. My son has seen a specialist (when he was 4) and he had all the tell-tale signs of ADHD, but the doctor felt that if we weren't pulling our hair out with him, that we shouldn't put him on meds until he was in grade 1 (age 6). My son is 5 now and he did quite well academically in school (J.K) , but he is constantly getting in trouble for not sitting properly during circle time, and most importantly, keeping his hands to himself. Now that it is summer time, we have enrolled him in soccer and swimming and the same issues are arising here. I hate hearing people talk badly about my son. It is so hurtful. At swimming today, one of the little girls in his class (there are 5 kids, my son and 4 girls!!!!) said he was mean and making her scared. He told me he just wanted to play with them and be their friends. At soccer (my husband is the coach), he is constantly tackling the other kids on both teams, claiming he just wants to hug them. He does have an aggressive side, but usually he is just trying to hug or kiss them. Everywhere we go, shopping, to a park, school, etc. I feel like I constantly have to watch him for fear of him hurting someone or annoying them. So my question is, should I bring him back to the specialist and try him on meds or just keep plugging away with the positive discipline? Any helpful suggestions? Thanks!!

2nd opinion

I think that you should try taking him for a second opinion.

What type of specialist have you been seeing? How often do you talk to him/her? The best is a pediatric psychiatrist, neurologist or developmental pediatrician. These are MDs who have seen all types of children with difficult symptoms. They are also able to order certain tests and prescribe medication where warranted. Follow-up should be monthly, especially during the first year or two.

That said, many doctors don't like to diagnose ADHD before school age because so much normal toddler/preschool behavior can seem like ADHD.

As for behavior management, you might want to try reading Raising Your Spirited Child by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka.

I FEEL YOUR ANXIETY

WHEN I READ YOUR POST, I FELT YOUR ANXIETY. MY DAUGHTER, WHO IS 10 ALSO, DOES THE EXACT SAME THING AS YOUR SON. SHE GOES UP TO PEOPLE OR KIDS HER AGE AND WANTS TO HUG OR KISS THEM. SHE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HAVING ADD AFTER SHE HAD 2 SEIZURES WHEN SHE WAS 4. I WISH THEY COULD FIND WHAT REALLY GOES ON IN YOUR BRAIN. WE NEVER HAD PROBLEMS WITH DISCIPLINING HER UNTIL AFTER SHE HAD HER 2 SEIZURES. NOW WHEN WE TRY TO SCOLD HER OR TRY TO CORRECT HER SHE JUST LAUGHS. WE TAKE OUR DAUGHTER TO A PYSCHOLOGIST AND WE KEEP GETTING TOLD, JUST KEEP WORKING WITH HER. SOMETIMES I'M ON THE BREAKING POINT AND I WOULD LIKE TO JUST RUN AWAY. IF THERE'S ANYTHING YOU HAVE TRIED AND WORKED PLEASE LET ME KNOW. MY DAUGHTER ON THE OTHER HAND DOES NOT GET INVITED TO BIRTHDAY PARTIES OR SLEEP OVERS. THERE WAS A SLEEP OVER AT ONE OF HER SOFTBALL TEAMMATES HOUSE. SHE WAS NOT INVITED. I FIND MYSELF CRYING JUST FOR THE FACT SHE DOES NOT HAVE MANY FRIENDS AND I PERSONALLY KNOW WHAT THAT FEELS LIKE. IF YOU EVER NEED A SHOULDER PLEASE CONTACT ME.
