Preteen Makes Dangerous Choices
Hi everyone. I am new to the forum, but my 12 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD/ODD when he was 8. He has made great gains with school behavior, treating others with respect and controlling meltdowns. My son is very intelligent, curious and creative. However, now that he is a preteen, he is beginning to express his independence and is making poor choices. He is not able to predict dangerous consequences before doing something. For instance, he is an early riser, and I awoke one morning to the smell of burning pasta in the kitchen. Yes, he chose to boil noodles for breakfast (without permission or guidance) and luckily I woke up before he was injured. Another afternoon he was home alone with our 7 year old dog and 6 month old puppy. He decided to experiment & fed our puppy cooked rice with seasonings. The puppy was sick for hours. Another time he took the car jack out of my van and jacked his trundle bed up so he could make a clubhouse in his room. How can we allow our son to be more independent (stay home alone when we go to the grocery store, etc.) if we can't trust him to make wise choices? Please help!
