ADD Adult and School + Dexedrine

I've just been diagnosed and also just turned 50. I would love to read others' experience who have just been diagnosed as an adult and went back to school. Most info if not all are about kids. Anyone? I also started with Dexedrine, worked it up to now 20mg per day. It's giving me a split headache and some insomnia. Anyone having the same symptoms? Thank you.

dexedrene use

I was diagnosed with ADD 5 years ago at the age of 62. I took 30 mg. Adderall XR in the morning until 3 months ago when, to save some money, changed to 2-15 mg. generic Dexedrine CR (controlled release) tabs. Found no difference. If they are taken by 9 am there is no insomnia. Also, when I started with the Adderall XR there were headaches but they went away in a couple of months. None now with the Dexedrine. The way I looked at it, the headaches were nothing compared with the problems solved by the Adderall after years of the complications caused by ADD.

Adult ADHD and College

Hi Nicou,

I am an adult student about to start medical school. After I was diagnosed with ADHD two years ago, my psychiatrist encouraged me to join a coaching program with a psychologist who specializes in adult ADHD and to do sufficient medication management. It took over a year, but these days I seem to do pretty well on two doses of Adderall XR, one in the morning and one mid-afternoon to help me stay focused during my study time. That said, I'll be the first one to tell you that it's far from easy being an adult student, and having ADHD makes it even harder. For this reason, I want to encourage you to schedule an appointment with the academic support center at your college. They provide incredibly beneficial services for nontraditional students. Also, make every effort to establish relationships with your teachers. Don't be shy to tell them about any difficulties you may have with keeping up with deadlines, organizing your thoughts, etc.

Hope this helps. In time it does get easier, I promise.
