Sleepiness Response
Unexplained response to reading and studying
ADHD Experts,
I am an adult male in my 40's diagnosed with AD/HD about 7 years ago but have only recently been on the proper level of Ritalin (50 mg/twice per day) to see significant changes. Having the proper level has revealed an anxiety that, at least currently, is border-line as to whether I need medication - especially if I focus on alternative ways of treating the anxiety. Testing has also revealed poor short-term memory.
The problem no one has been able to address is one I've had since at least college. Whenever I read texts that require higher concentration - whether technical or literary, I become very drowsy to the point that I feel I need a nap. Moving onto some other activity often alleviates the sleepiness. In college I would clean through my apartment in order to stay awake, then fail to complete my work.
It is interesting to note that the sleepiness response is stronger when the material is especially boring or particularly interesting, or if I am failing to understand the material well. I'm not clear whether this is a function of anxiety, ADHD, both, or neither. Furthermore, I am not clear where to start in terms of trying to address it.
I haven't tested my theory yet, but I am suspicious that drinking a beer (as a test, not treatment!) might alleviate the symptoms. I am wondering if it did alleviate the symptoms, what that might indicate, if anything.
I would appreciate any direction you might offer.
