Disclosing to career counselling service...

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could provide me with some insight here..

Tomorrow I'm going to see a government (of Canada) supported career counselling service. I'm currently "under employed" (working part-time on a contract basis) and I've been seriously considering a career change for a very long time (like 2 years!) There are some services in the community here that provide assistance to women with "significant barriers" to employment. This could be something as simple as self-esteem issues (check) but also more serious situations like living with an abusive partner (thank heavens no!)

The thing is, on paper I look very employable. In fact, if I really worked hard at it, it's likely I'd find work fairly quickly. I've even run my own business in the past. The problem is - I don't think this type of work is working for me. I work with computers and while I'm pretty competent, I just don't care anymore. I haven't been able to keep a job for more than a year or two before getting fired or quitting. I wasn't too sucessful at running the business either...

I would rather get into somethink more like art therapy (I have training in fine arts and am very interested in psychology.) In fact I'm going to start volunteering for a program that does equine therapy (obviously not the same thing, but it's a step.)

Anyway, I'm wondering if it's a mistake to disclose my ADD to the counsellor.. My parter (who also has ADD but has lived with it much longer) seems to think so and that it's never a good idea to have it on record. I'm sure there much be some sort of confidentiality with these places, but I can't help but wonder if that is a risk.. Otherwise, I'm concerned that I won't qualify for this assistance. But I don't know any other way that I could get help with retraining.

In the past I've had problems being too honest and it would often work against me, so I don't know how much to disclose. Any advice or feedback would really help me right now.. Thanks :)

all good!

Turns out I didn't need to mention it at all! It was enough just to say, "I want to find work that is better suited to my personality and skills." And they were able to help!

Just thought I should follow up in case anyone else was wondering the same thing I was. :)

In the end...

I'm glad it all worked out, and you only had to say what you wanted to say! Best of luck with everything.
