Alternative ADHD Treatments

Hi Traci:

Welcome to ADDitude and thanks for your post! Many, many families find that the dietary changes, supplements and minerals mentioned in ADDitude's summer issue do wonders for managing ADHD symptoms. Some people swear by fish oil alone. Others insist iron is the key. Others follow a Feingold Diet low in sugars and additives.

The trick is really working with your family doctor on a mix of supplements, dietary changes, and exercise that makes the biggest impact. I would definitely recommend downloading ADDitude's free report on Alternative ADHD Treatments and bringing that with you to your next doctor visit. You may also want to check out the new comprehensive ADHD Treatment eBook, which delves into medication as well as non-medical treatments.

Overall, you don't have to implement all 10 suggestions from the summer issue. You can do as little or as much makes sense and makes a difference for your family.

Good luck!

My first question

is Why did you take your daughter off her medication? Was she having negative symptoms ? The reason I ask is because I am ADHD and have taken medications , herbs and done many of the other things and frankly they work better in concert with each other . Ritalin LA 20 mg works for me, I do take Fish Oil, Vitamins and recently have been exercising. If I skip the Ritalin I do feel a major difference but it not the one you would hope for based on the all the other things staying in place. I would say nuero feedback has some benefits but in ADHD it not a easy task to learn because you have to sit still and visualize things. Meditation I can do but it doesn't really help my ADHD but it does decrease my anxiety. Diet in natural sugar versus frutose and more natural diet is just better sense for everyones health. The best working combuination for me is my medication, vitamins and fish oil with exercise it only then is my ADHD under control until the meds wear off . then my ADHD raise it head again. Be very careful with thing in the herbs because they do have very serious sideeffects and they can be deadly. Remember things like Ginseng can cause fast heart rates, licorce can raise bloodpressure and St. Johnswoth and ootherused for depression . Rememebr Herbs may not be prescribed but they are in someway medication without prescriptions . So be real careful
