ADHD, Anesthesia, and Akathisia

I ran across this article and found that my dx son experienced akathisia after receiving pre-op anesthesia. Akathisia is generally described as a sense of internal restlessness. While I was told the sedative should make him drowsy within 15 minutes, he was quite the opposite with kicking, screaming, and growling (this experience was when my teen son was a toddler). It is not the normal behavior he has and I have only seen it another time he recieved a numbing agent before receiving stitches. He has no memory of it afterwards.

I'm trying to sort this out to see if he has just ADHD or ADHD and something else.

Reaction to Anesthesia

Do you know what the medications were that he was given each time? How old was he in the other instance you mentioned when he got stitches?

Some cold and allergy medications that are supposed to make one drowsy sometimes have the opposite effect on children.

I do know that the medication Procaine (similar in type to novacaine), when given intraveneously, can cause similar type reactions in some individuals, particularly those with some types of epilepsy or with borderline personality disorder.

You might want to also discuss this with your pharmacist, who may have some insight. I have never read or heard of anything regarding this reaction in connection with ADHD, although many individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) have ADHD as well. But BPD doesn't usually develop until puberty or early adulthood.

Hope this was of some help.

Reaction to Anesthesia/Sedatives

I know last year I went through two procedures. One I was supposed to have been sedated (colonoscopy) the other actually out (day surgery). I was told by my cousin, who has ADD (I have ADHD) to ask for the "milky" sedative for the colonoscopy. Doctor's office didn't have it, and decided to give me a little more of the other stuff. Despite the doctor's insistance that I wouldn't remember any of it - I still remember (almost 12 months exactly to the day) the conversation he and one of the techs had.... and I wasn't pleased. On top of that, the only effect that the sedative had was to give me a weird feeling behind my left eye.

The hospital procedure (day surgery) was a totally different experience. Prior to surgery the anestesiologys came in to talk to me. I told her I was going through the process of ADHD assessment, and strongly suspected that some sedatives do no work on me and explained what had happened about six weeks earlier. She told me that they'd make sure I was out before the surgery began. I went out quickly and stayed out during the entire procedure. This is good to know, because I'm going through a similar procedure in a couple of weeks and I'm actually going to be going through pre-op Tuesday.

I think the key for me is to ensure the person who's going to be administering whatever - knows upfront I have ADHD, and I need to ensure they understand the impact.
