ADHD and comorbid BPD

Hi everyone out there... how can I find out if I suffer from ADHD with a comorbid borderline personality disorder? I received my ADHD diagnosis in 1993 but I always had the impression, that I somehow show certain Borderline symptoms which are unusual among ADHD patients e.g. in certain interactions in relationships etc. Although I never cut myself intentionally my emotions are extremely unstable, my way of thinking is described as being dichotomous (according to others) and I frequently experience times in which I feel chronically empty some kind of numb inside. According to DSM-IV 7 or 8 of nine inidcators fit to me except the self-harming thing. How can I figure out if I could have aspects of borderline as a comorbidity. Is there any test for differencial diagnosis in this case? If you have any idea just post it. Thank you very much!

ADHD and BPD

Hi,

Approximately half of those individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) have ADHD as well. I personally know of at least 12 individuals where that is the case. There are some similarities but there are differences as well. It takes someone well trained and experienced with both disorders to either differentiate between the two or to be able to recognize the combination when both of those disorders are present. And there are also the various forms of bipolar disorder to consider. These three disorders can all be misdiagnosed as one of the others, and in some instances an individual can have all three. I do have a friend who has all three but it was a long time before she received the BPD diagnosis. Since she has been treated for the BPD as well as her bipolar disorder, she is doing so much better.

Here is a website that describes all three disorders (amongst others) and has an article titled, "Is it ADHD, BPD or Bipolar?" This website is run by a doctor who treats all of these "biological" disorders. My family knows him well. You can find this at www.biologicalunhappiness.com I also sent you a private message.

Hope this helps, Elaine
