I think that if a patient has an untreated mental illness or disorder, they're more likely to be messed up in any way you can imagine.
It's called self-medicating. The inappropriate use of substances, food, or in this instance, sex. Digging out all the specifics and giving them a DSM-appropriate names (ie, comorbid PRD) separates the issue from the bottom line: Whether it's depression, BPD, or AD(H)D, an untreated patient will find ways to self-soothe, often to a destructive end.
