Please Help With My 8-Year-Old Male Twin

My son, Jacob, is in 2nd grade. We just discovered last summer that he has ADD. I have suspected a problem since Kindergarten or before but no one would help me. He is struggling and has had 2 tutors the entire school year. He's burned out on school but we can't stop or I'm afraid he'll regress. He struggles most in reading, phonics, and spelling. He has passed with his grades, but he probably should repeat 2nd grade, but I don't think it would do well for his conficence. He's a twin and his sister does very well in school. Any ideas??? I also need ideas on how to study Spelling words with him.

ADHD and Language Skills

ADDitude has some great resources for building reading skills and writing skills in children with ADHD.

Better Language Skills for Children with ADHD or Learning Disabilities is a great article with ideas for helping in the classroom and at home.

You should also know that learning disabilities like dysgraphia and dyslexia are more common in children with ADHD. I would recommend reading up on signs and symptoms so that you can be certain something other than ADHD is to blame...

Best of luck!

Hang in there

First, you don't mention if your son is on medication. In my son's case medication did a significant difference, he is also 8 years old. Give the boy an structure, you two can organize his day in a colorful schedule. Motivate his efforst with stickers and at the end of the week can trade stickers for a prize like tv time or video games. I know all of these doesn't sound like an inmediate solution. You already started with the tutoring but tutoring alone doesn't work no matter how good the teachers are. He needs to get involved in a possitive way. He needs to be motivated. One thing I notice works in my case was lot of fresh air and exercise together. Go to a park, grab a bike and enjoy with him. I think this site can help you with spelling problems http://www.starfall.com/ and for math http://www.coolmath4kids.com/. My kid love them. Also you can get materials in the library and invent some cool math games during car rides. And above all, notice his efforts no matter how weak they seem to be. Probably they cost him a lot.

ADD learning style

If it were my child (and It is) I'd start by throwing away phonics and start teaching your child to read and spell using a visual, whole-language approach. (see Spelling made easy, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nlsOheU9dY) For math, I'd go back to manipulatives, blocks, dice and simple playing cards with both the number-symbol and the corresponding number of spade/clubs/diamonds/hearts on the card. You can also go to www.swish4fish.com for more information on ADD learning styles and strategies.
