Terrified the Meds are Stunting His Growth
I cannot seem to get a straight answer from a doctor. My 12 year old son has been on Adderall for 3 years. He started with 10 mg and after 2 years we went to 20. We try to take weekend drug holidays but he begs me to give him his meds because he says he doesn't get in trouble when he takes them. That's heartbreaking enough.
I have noticed that his peers have grown by leaps and bounds over him and it's becoming more and more obvious every day. He looks TINY compared to most. He was in the 98th percentile for height and weight when he was born and continued to be in the 75th for most of his life and now he's barely in the 50th. I know he has slimmed way down because of the meds, but he is not at all under weight. I know he could be a "late(r) bloomer" and if not for the meds, I wouldn't worry because I would know it was coming.
Here's the question...if the meds are causing a growth problem, will it correct itself if he takes the summer off or is it permanent? I can't find any clear articles on what can be done to avoid it....other than going off the meds altogether and even then I'm not sure if that means he'll catch up.
Thanks for any info for this paranoid mother...:-)
