New Here... Any Tips for Mornings?

Hi! I'm new here so I need to give a bit of background first. I am a single mom to 2 boys adopted from fostercare (now 13 and 11 yrs old) and 2 fostersons whom I'll be adopting shortly. They all have some issues due to their background but the 3 older ones were also all diagnosed with ADHD. They ALL came to me already diagnosed...I didn't seek these diagnoses but have to agree that SOMETHING isn't right. All 3 are on meds which control the symptoms during school. My oldest son is 13 and not really hyperactive...he needs help focusing. The 11 year old is mainly silly when the meds wear off. The 8 yr old is outright out of control at times.

Here's my main issue at the moment. The 8 yr old WAKES up wild. As soon as he wakes up it's go, go, go. I don't mean in just an overactive way, either. He jumps on his bed, throws things at the other kids, will roll from one end of the couch to the other. Until the meds kick in he can't hold anything without throwing it or swinging it around (even a shirt he's SUPPOSED to be putting on). I give the boys their meds first thing and with the older two that's good enough. It takes them enough time to wind up that the meds kick in before they are out of control. J, however, is instantly out of control more days than not.

My question...any ideas for helping us get through the 20-30 mins it takes for the meds to kick in???? (Yes, it's that bad!)

ADHD in the Morning

Wow! You are a brave woman - some many boys and only one mom! As for containing your son's morning energy, have you ever tried waking him up 30 minutes earlier than normal, popping his medicine in his mouth and telling him to snuggle back to sleep? I'm not sure if he'd be able to fall back asleep, but if so that could work. If not, you likely don't want him waking everyone else...

Here are a few additional articles that might help with ideas:

Thanks

I'll check out the links as soon as I have time. Thanks! I haven't tried waking him early because he has sleep issues and wakes up early (he was also diagnosed with PTSD). I might try it though. I don't care if he goes back to sleep so long as he's calm, doesn't wake anyone, and isn't too tired.

Morning troubles

I have tried all the suggestions, my little guy fights taking his pill in the morning, won't get up, fights me every step of the way. This morning was awful! I can't believe how hard this is! Any other suggestions on getting them to take their meds?

Morning Meds Challenge

Hello, My son Nicholas is 10 years old and will not swallow a pill so I pull it apart and put it on top of a spoon of applesauce each day. This has worked out well for us. You could try anything your child likes, such as pudding, yogurt, etc. I also have recently started using liquid vitamins that I can put in a small glass of juice. I tell Nicholas that if he finishes breakfast and drinks his juice he can have a small treat such as a cookie or small piece of chocolate. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Rose, Chesapeake, Va.
