Need Some Advice on What Could be Prejudice

Hello Fellow ADDers. I hope you are all well. Greetings from Glasgow, Scotland, UK. Firstly, I was diagnosed last July (08) with ADD (non medicated) and I am having difficulties adjusting to the 'New Me'. So are a lot of other people, especially those who are ignorant. I am English living in Glasgow and have plans to move back. A friend of mine is helping me to do this by flat hunting for me. He found a place on Tues 28 April and put a deposit down for me. He completed the form and sent it up to me to sign and I returned it directly to the letting agency. As my friend is Guarantor on the rent he had to include his details and did this in a separate application which he handed in to the letting agency on the same day the agency received mine. They told my friend that my ID was perfect (my passport photo, a utility bill and documentation with my Social Security Number). Then my friend 'let slip' that I have ADD and now the agency are demanding 6 months bank statements to 'see how responsible I am with money'. I feel very insulted by this request and at the moment I am refusing to issue these as no other letting agent I have been with has ever asked for these, and other agencies usually ask for 3 months. My friend is going away for a week and said he will sort this out when he gets back. If he hadn't of said something they wouldn't need this information. Now I feel victimized and feel as though I'm having my finances - and purchases - scrutinized just because I have ADD. I know that things are different in the US to the UK, so think I am here to basically vent my frustration, but if there is any advice or someone would like to say something I thank you in advance for your time. With blessings in frustration.CharlotteJayne.

That sucks!

Hi, Charlotte.

Your story is the first that I have come across in the multitude of ADHD forums that I peruse. Besides a blatant insult, the action of the letting company may also be illegal. You will have to check on the statues in your part of the world. Her in the States, we have laws that protect renters from any type of discrimination, be it racial, gender, or ADHD.

I find it ironic that they would ask for bank statements. I wonder if they do the same when someone submits an application that states that they worked for AIG. The current economic malaise was not caused by people who have ADHD. It was caused by the so-called normal segment of the population that suffers from GREED. They are the ones who need to have their bank statements checked and placed immediately on medications.

Yes, they do

I can confirm 100% that some banks, landlords, ect are demanding that AIG employees show excessive proof of employment, proof of past payment, forms from AIG stating that the employee will be employed for at least the next year, ect. It's insane and wrong.
